  • Peter and the Chat

I have been loving my participation in Socrates Cafe, Internet Island, and occasionally Featured Grownups, and I am meeting some great people through those blogrings, but, since my computer time is limited due to my work schedule, I have also been feeling like I do not write blogs anymore that are not topic blogs and that possibly I am being lost from my blog in some ways. This morning, I was writing a rather long entry for a topic on Peter Noone’s website, and I happened to think that this would make a great blog for those of you who were interested in what I said about Peter in my Thanksgiving blog. OK – this actually is a topic blog, but it’s not a Xanga topic blog, so that counts, doesn’t it? It shows a more frivolous side of my personality than the things I have been writing for my blog rings.

Peter has a chat on his website. I used to chat there a lot, but I am rarely in there now. Peter does chat, but this is a story from the time before he visited the chat. The topic I was addressing on Peter’s website was “What was your favorite chat experience with Peter?”

OK – my favorite chat with Peter took place when he wasn’t in the chat! Back in the early days of his site, before its many reincarnations, there was no chat. Then the Butt Ugly chat was born and the Butt Ugly Chat Babes lived in there. Peter never visited that chat, but he did communicate with it once. During the fan event at Carruthersville, MO, he called me on the phone and I keyed for him so that he could send messages to the chat.

Now, before you go assuming that I was chosen for that honor because of some special relationship with Peter, that is not the case. I was chosen strictly because I had 2 phone lines and could be on the computer and on the phone at the same time. (Hasn’t technology changed since then?!)

Anyway, I was in the chat and sitting there anxiously waiting for the phone to ring. I did not tell anyone in the chat what I was expecting, but there were about 16 people in there, which was a big crowd for those days, especially since a lot of people were at the fan event in Carruthersville. I was playing either the Glory Boys album or the Tremblers album as I waited, mostly because I thought that Peter would think it was cool if he heard it in the background.

The phone finally rang, and my heart almost stopped! Judith was the first voice I heard, but as soon as she verified that she had the right person, she handed the phone to Peter. I could hear her in the background explaining to him who I was, and then I heard him saying very clearly, “I know who she is!” and giving her my email address. I was pretty impressed!

I remember my surprise when I keyed “I have Peter on the phone” into the chat. Nobody doubted my word. I couldn’t believe it! Everyone repeated it, though, so all the way down the screen it read, “Nancy has Peter on the phone!” It was incredibly exciting to all of us!

One of the first things Peter said to me was, “What are you wearing?” I don’t remember my reply, but I must have sounded pretty horrified because he quickly said, “Isn’t that what you say in a chat?” For the record, I was not really willing to actually tell him what I was wearing. It was an over-sized t-shirt that I slept in and nothing else. I did not know him well enough to tell him that! Of course, now I have told all of you.

I soon discovered that it was very confusing to have Peter singing in one ear and talking in the other, so I had to turn off the record player. I never did know if he heard himself. My husband says that listening to my end of the conversation was very funny, because it consisted of things like, “Will you be quiet!!” and “I am trying to type here!” interspersed with things that the people in the chat were saying to him. Let me tell you, that man talks fast and I don’t key that fast! He was pretty impressed that I key with all 10 fingers though. I remember him asking me about that.

The conversation went on for about 30 or 40 minutes. That night the chat was introduced to the Rev and told about things that would be happening with the website and the fan club. They had a chance to send messages to Peter. It was a great evening for all of us in the chat. I am not so sure that it was as exciting to all the fans in Carruthersville who were sitting there watching Peter talk on the phone!

Here is a picture from that night. Note the bottled water and the banana split, both Peter Noone trademarks, as well as the phone attached to his ear. The picture is a scan of a picture printed from an email, so it is not very good. I have the original someplace, but this is the one I can find. Judith took the picture and sent it to me. I think this was actually the first Picture This event (something that is done at fan club events from time to time, with fans coming away with an autographed picture of themselves with Peter), since she was taking Polaroid photos of everyone with Peter and having him sign them.

  • Wow…I bet that was pretty cool!

  • FOMCLMAO! What a great story! Ok, I like him on a personal level now, talk about a wicked sense of humor! That’s damned funny!

  • Yes “The Bell Jar” is about depression. I suggest you read it. So far it is great

  • Remember those early days of computers and Internet. I thought it was so cool to chat on dial up with people all over. Now voice chats are in and no one has to type anymore. I bet you had a ball transcribing for Peter.

  • He sems like a cool guy…I had a crush on him way back when…him and one of the monkeys….ryc…our lifespans are increasing….but I do understand…I haven’t any grand kids yet and I hope I do while I am still relatively young…..Peace

  • Dear Nancy,

I speak from experience. It is quite incredible to read two blog entries from any one blogger where both are so perfect, yet completely different. And, it might be pointed out emphatically, neither are ‘blog ring topic entries.’ The first was your poem, “Choices”, which, no matter how hard you try to sound like you just “jot down a few words when they come to you” or words to that effect that you wrote me, was a fantastic piece of poetry. And I should know. I’ve written a few. Now I read this wonderful reminiscence of not only yours and Peter Noone’s relationship, (I’ve heard “Mrs. Brown, You’ve got a Lovely Daughter” now in my head since I started reading your reminiscence.) but also of the “early days” of the net. The idea that Peter is on an analog phone line, relating to you what to say, while you are typing it into the computer on your end, is just delicious. It’s entries like this one is why I love reading personal blogs. The photo adds just the right “touch” to the story. For me, great blogging is like putting together a magazine. (I’ve been making magazines since I was a kid, and I have blogged pages for some of them) My own blog is supposed to resemble a magazine, with articles, columns, and regular features. Joining blogrings and writing Topic Post entries is like having “filler” articles to write if I don’t have anything ready. If you have something that needs blogging, then write it first, as you have here, and in the post before, and post it first. The topic entries can be posted later. (I’ll notepad two or three entries, and select which one I want to post at any given time. This way I utilize all my computer time so I can do more, like write long comments on other’s blogs.(Sorry)

I will try with my blogring (Internet Island) to let the members “breath” between entries. You belong to the same blogrings I do, I notice. That won’t be three a week you have to blog about with my ring, and Featured Grownups doesn’t do topic posts every week. More like once a month if memory serves. Socrate’s Cafe can get a bit tight, even for me, because they are ‘serious’ questions, and the idea of the blogring is to stimulate philosophical discussion. I was asked to join, and thought I’d give it a try. I think I finally have figured out how to “do it” but writing the actual post sometimes takes a while, because I have to think it over for three or four days before writing.

I’m sort of free associating with your excellent entry here and your comments on my Topic Post for Internet Island. I don’t want my “questions” to be “hard”. I basically want to get people together that might not otherwise know each other. I can’t remember if I “met” you through the Island, the Cafe, or the Grownups. But I wouldn’t have met you if it weren’t for some “topic post” on a blogring. I’ve gained more of my readers through these blogrings than who might have just “stopped by”. (Although to be honest I pick up lots of readers from people who’ve read my comments. )

So don’t sweat any “topic posts” on my blogring. The “island” is our home, not a school. The topic posts are just to make it “easier” for some of those folks who might not otherwise visit the other members on their own. So far, I’ve met a lot of folks, and am ashamed I haven’t met more. But I like to push myself.

I’m thankful to have read this entry. Like I said, it’s reading the true stories of others, written well, that makes me love the internet, and it’s ability to bring the stories of each of us to the other, and to show us our similarities and our beautiful differences.

(I loved the fact that HH was in the “first wave”. That was back in 1963, and that’s the year I call “the year I became aware”. I only then started to “catalogue” my own life and times. )

  • Oh, well, I don’t think I can really follow Michael’s entry!

I enjoyed this post – short and sweet!

  • Nancy,  what a great memory!  How many people have the chance to talk with a celebrity, much less one of their personal favorites?  And to transcribe it instantaneously to many others, to boot!  Peter really does sound like a decent person.  Great account, Nancy!

    Take care –  John

  • Like Michael, I am hearing ‘Mrs. Brown You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter’.. Wonder if that song were written today would it say Ms. instead of Mrs. ,, that is amusing about his question,’what are you wearing’? lol I have heard that in a few chats, I just say’clothes;.. I think that would have been alot of fun and I enjoyed reading about it, also the sundae, nice touch. He still looks about the same as way back when too.. Thanks for letting me know about it.

    Peace and Love:)

  • RYC:  I had forgotten that Peter had performed here.  Ken hates to go to live concerts, so we never get to them—unless it is something the grands are involved in.

If I had had to do the typing with him talking in my ear, I just know I would have loused something up!!  That was so neat, though.  You are a woman of many talents!!!!

  • Sounds pretty exciting. You should have told him what you were wearing just to see how he would react… Or better yet told him nothing and after hearing his reaction (hopefuly an entertaininly embarrassed one) you could tell him you were just messing with him… Then again maybe he would have played along since it seems like he was messing with you a little with that question.

  • It’s pretty cool that you were able to type fast enough to enter all that in a chat. I know I would be saying over and over to repeat it.

  • thats a cool story .

  • wow! that was a really cool story! you have to keep it so you can tell your grandchild and they can tell theirs – memories

  • Fun! Thanks for letting me know! ryc: I love silhouette pictures too, esp. of trees. I believe about the statue. Take care, you! p.s write what you want, no rules here!

  • FYI: accually, I hate housework and most things domestic, its just that monday is my cleaning day. If you came to my house right now you would see just how much I suck at cleaning LOL as it is still a MESS.

That is too cool about the dreams you used to have!! I would work at UNblocking them if it was me. I am mostly German, but I love all the old style stuff, except poka… I just cant take poka. (this town is Swiss, and durring our fair all you hear is stinking poka music!)

about your post: LOL That would have been fun!! My husband and I started out on webtv and we both went to the same chatroom, but never at the same time, but everyone knew we were husband/wife. Then we got two phone lines and two webtvs, and MAN did we mess the chat room up by showing up AT THE SAME TIME!!! LOL

Ah the good old days…. I tell my kid that I remember before PCs, before microwaves, before cable, before FOX and she is like, wow, you poor thing, what did you do?? Played in my room with my sisters and made a big mess of it LOL great post!

  • ryc: Thought the proverb ‘apt’! Are you Swedish? I’m 100% Norwegian-hardy folk-lol. Keep warm-it’s awful out there-hope you don’t have to drive anywhere?

  • Chats are fun… I get really silly whilst chatting. I can’t help myself. LOL <—-chatspeak for “laughing out loud”… but then you already knew that. I like to use chatspeak in everyday conversation. When someone says something funny, I just say “lol.”

    BE blessed!
    Steve

  • I am saving this post, it just tickles me no end. At first, I didn’t remember who he was then I read your comments. My name was Brown so I really took to that song about Mrs. Brown’s daughter! I loved those boys, yes, I did. I also got such a kick from picturing you in only a t-shirt. That is my kind of nightwear! What a wonderful blog this is, dear friend! Thank you for making my evening!!!!!

  • How fun that must have been for you!…but you have also met him in person I think…I would like to know what it was like the first time you met him in person?…

About the only “famous” person I know is Rob Lievelt (creater of the Xmen cartoons), he is famous and rich now, but I know him as my kid brothers best friend and best man at his wedding….mostly I remember that I NEVER wanted to play “pictionary” with him, cause he always WON, he is such a good cartoonist! LOL

  • Why doesn’t Peter ever call me??? Aren’t I cool too? =(

    lol
