Pie Safe
Thursday, I had lunch with two of my college friends. In recent years, we have started getting together every couple of months. Sometimes it’s just lunch, and other times we also shop. This time, we browsed a very nice antique shop in one of the little towns near where I live.
We have a lot of antiques in our home, and when I shop, I frequently see pieces that I really like, but usually I cannot figure out where I would put them. Our house is really rather full and the problem is more thinning out what we already have than acquiring new treasures. On this expedition, though, I found this lovely pie safe. I have always wanted one and I have always known where I would put it. I have a wide hallway just off my kitchen that I have thought would be the perfect place for a pie safe.
I don’t know whether or not you can see, but my wallpaper has stripes in it that are exactly the same color as this pie safe. To me, that meant that I was supposed to have it. That makes sense, don’t you think? Anyway, I think it looks very nice there. It’s very old, but it’s in good shape. The areas on the sides that look like they are scuffed are not scuffed. That is the perforated tin that allows ventilation so fresh pies can cool. I am very happy with my purchase!

That is nice! It does look ike it belongs there!
Oh, do I ever need to thin here…but it’s so hard. It just goes against the grain to get rid of stuff, somehow.
“like” – I saw it, but too late!
I like the striped-wallpaper look.
RYC: ARSE was in the first two editions of the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary — published in 1976 and revised in 1991. However, beginning with the third edition — about 1995 — pressures from assorted political groups convinced Hasbro to delete any so-called “offensive” terms. ARSE, being defined as an offensive terms for the buttocks, has been omitted from the third and fourth editions of OSPD.
However, tournament Scrabble players were appalled at the prospect of having to unlearn all the words they’d worked so hard to memorize. REDSKIN, FATSO, SHIT, and words I still like to refer to as the F-word and the N-word, and a couple of hundred other such words defined as offensive.
So there was a compromise. ARSE and all the rest would remain on the official word list for American tournaments, but the book that was sold to the public, which would also be the official reference for School Scrabble tournaments, would exclude those words.
So if you’re going by the OSPD you’re likely to have at home, you won’t find ARSE. But in tournaments, the word is acceptable.
There was a famous incident a few years ago where the final best three out of five match for the U.S. championship was televised on ESPN. The expurgated words were disallowed. One player made the mistake of playing LEZ, and the opponent did not challenge.
The producers later had a hissy fit. I think the ruling was that the word had to come off the board, even though it was not challenged, because the game was being televised to the public. (On tape, not live.)
Hi Nancy! Ryc and responded! Thanks!!

I have never heard of a pie safe before , it looks like a micorwave
I added some links & an index too to my new themes, from my old xanga skin. Thanks for sharing yours.
I don’t think you can change the date/time on the pulse. Maybe check Xanga’s FAQ.
ditto on englishjuls – overall the furniture/pie safe looks good.
RYC: Thanks
I love the look of pie safes, with their punched tin openings. No room for one here, and doesn’t go with my decor, but I still like the look of them. I agree that you had to buy it to match the wallpaper. But, now you DO realize you can never change the wallpaper, don’t you??? lol
I did say I had not heard of a pie safe before so sorry I got it wrong , I just thought it was a cabinet.
nice wallpaper
Of course, it’s perfect!
You teach me with the pie safe , Nancy . I suppose its name says its function !
You ask me if it ‘ s Maurice Chevalier who sings in my site . You are no far but it ‘ s Charles Trenet singing ” les sanglots longs des violons … ” , poem by Verlaine .
Love
Michel
ps : You have changed the look . It ‘ s nice .
About ” pulse ” I don’t t understand what is this new xanga feature .
Lovely, Nancy! I have always admired them! Of course, living in an apartment, I don’t have room for anything but the bare essentials. I worried about a large lovely mirror that I want my grandaughter to have and she can’t get right now so I did find a spot of it on a little wall next to the kitchen. Then I found there were no studs so I took an old wooden medicine cabinet that my mom had, cleaned it up nice, nailed a strip of molding on top and leaned this huge mirror on it. I have had many comments on it.
Enjoy your find!
I agree with the Socrates Cafe thought. Do you think a lot of the people just stay on their own sites?
I like the pie safe! Yvonne, my wife, is somewhat interesting in antiques, but not overboard. Retirement works for us pretty well. I’m guessing you are not retired and still work. Kudos to MN for the WWII vets display. South Dakota did a big event in Pierre last year honoring all vets and my brother was so impressed with the expressions of thank you. (He is a Vet.) Where is the MN site?
