  • North Shore 2007 Part 1

Last week, our family made our annual trek to the North Shore of Lake Superior.  It’s become a tradition that we all enjoy.  We rent cabins at the edge of the Superior  National Forest.  There is no phone, no TV, and no internet, so it’s very peaceful and we all get a chance to relax and unwind.  We don’t really rough it, though.  The larger of our cabins has 3 bedrooms, a large great room, a fully supplied kitchen complete with dishwasher, and 2 bathrooms.  The smaller cabin is similar but only has sleeping accommodations for 4.  Here are a couple of pictures of the great room.

We really enjoyed that window seat in the second picture.  It was a great place to curl up with a book or even to take a little nap.  Most of the time, though, we were out enjoying our “beach.”  The resort is called Sugar Beach, which is something of a joke.  Here’s the beach.

The beach in this area is volcanic rock.  In fact, it’s some of the oldest rock in the world.  It’s great for climbing around and no sand gets tracked into the cabin.  That’s Dan with Will on his shoulders, Jake in the yellow, and Andy looking at something through his binoculars.

There are lots of seagulls.  They are very happy to see us come because we give them our left overs.  They will actually hover right in front of your face but I did not have any luck getting a picture of that.

That second picture is some vegetation bravely hanging onto the rock to grow.  There is not a lot of topsoil, but it’s amazing what grows anyway.

We like to hike and there are lots of good trails.  This is Dan and me with Jake and Will one day when we went hiking.  Don’t you wonder why we took a baby up onto those high rocks?  The second picture was also taken that day.  I like it because it shows how it can be perfectly clear and sunny where you are, but just a short distance away, there can be heavy Lake Superior fog rolling in.

In the evenings, we often have bonfires.  Here are Andy, Madison, Jess with Will, and Betsy out on the beach just before the bonfire, then Betsy taking a picture and Madison with a toasted marshmallow.

Matt likes to build rock sculptures and he is really very good at it.  Here he is building one in a little pool of water.
The second picture is one of Matt’s sculptures in the background on the far right, some of Madison’s in the background, and some of Andy and Jake’s in the foreground.  We left quite a little art gallery on the beach.  This is the first year that other members of the family have tried their hands at rock art.

There is a little park about half a mile from the cabins.  They have some playground equipment, but the big attraction seemed to be this jetty.  Those are big rocks.  Keep in mind that that’s Dan in center of the picture and he is over 6 feet tall.

Here are Dan and I.  We have on matching sweatshirts from the Grand Portage National Monument.  Our kids tease us when we dress alike.

The kids do play in the cabin sometimes.  These pictures were taken in the bedroom loft where Dan and I slept.  The boys built a “no girls allowed” fort in a little cubbyhole storage area.  Then the girls had to retaliate by establishing a “girl zone.”

I will have 2 more North Shore blogs, one showing you how a 4th of July parade is done in a very small resort community and the other about a day hiking the Temperance River.

  • the cabins look nice and the area is beautiful!

  • That looks like it was a lot of fun! While I was on vacation I saw someone building rock sculptures and it was quite interesting. I always wondered how people did that.

  • What a great family holiday. You would not think it was as lake, it looks more like a sea shore with those rocks and seaguls. Your cabin is lovely, it must be great to be away from the real world

  • wow great photos

  • That cabin is fantastic.  Cabins sure have changed from when I was young!!  I remember VERY rustic—-sometimes without indoor plumbing!   This cabin I could enjoy!!  What a wonderful place for all of you to get together.  Looks like something for everyone to enjoy.  Looking forward to the next installments.

RYC:  Just started Mortal Prey.  When you mentioned Sandford to me before, I checked my little notebook of books I’d read.  Had read a few of Sandford’s, and then had kind of forgotten about him.  So, will read a few more now.  Thanks for the reminder.  As to the other book, our library is supposed to have it, but I cannot find it on the shelf.  It may have been misplaced.  Will check again the next time I go—I have it on my list of books to look for.  If it shows to be “in” in the online catalog, and it isn’t on the shelf, then I will mention it to the librarian.  Maybe they can find it for me.  When I worked in our high school library, I would get so upset with kids who didn’t put books away in the proper place.  We had a couple boys who would go in a more hidden area of the shelves and move books around on purpose.  When they were caught, they were banned!!

  • Wow…what a beautiful place.

  • I remember seeing Don Ho when I was only 10 years old. My dad looked a lot like Don Ho and when we traveled about the islands people often thought he was Don! He signed a few autographs because he couldn’t get across that he really wasn’t Don Ho!
I saw him again three years ago when he could only sit at his keyboard and rely on other musicians (all of whom he’d discovered)to actually perform the songs he was so well known for. Folks in the islands are still in shock over his death as he had just had surgery which they felt sure would guarantee many years to come.
He will surely be missed and we will enjoy all of our recordings for years to come. I am glad you were able to come and enjoy the islands. We are going on the island cruise in a couple fo months.

  • I do so admire your new page!!! Congratulations!

What a fabulous vacation and in such a beautiful place. I really like the UP in Michigan for it’s wildness and rocky shores. Also your cabin is something else! Who needs TV, computers, or any other entertainment when you had all this?

I am looking forward to your next blog!

  • It looks like a wonderful vacation get away. It doesn’t look like you are roughing it. I don’t know about you but I need electricity and modern plumbing. The rest of it I can do without for a vacation. Just to be at the lake is a vacation. I am at our lake (Lake Erie)cottage right now as I write this. Those are very pretty pictures you have shared with us.

RYC: Jeff’s book A Minor Case of Murder is the perfect summer read. It is not too heavy and not to fluffy. Just the perfect combination of quirky characters and a great plotline. It goes down as easily as an ice cold lemonade on a hot day!

Thanks for breezing by my site.

  • This cabin looks somptuous and I imagined you enjoy this special atmosphere of a shore in basaltic rock
Everyone find to play and to walk around .
I laughed at seeing the girlies corner and the boys’ corner !
    Great time , Nancy .
    Love

    Michel
